I think it's a marketing thing trying to highlight novel aspects of WW1 to make it seem more interesting and appealing to a general audience. If this was marketed as a predictable WW1 game you'd expect a higher-budget Verdun, and there's a reason why Verdun isn't going to reach as much of an audience as Battlefield 1.
